Do you ever wonder why restaurant salsa tastes so much better than what you can buy in the store? Would you believe me if I told you that homemade salsa is a lot easier to make than you think?
In this blog I will show you how to make your very own homemade salsa that is just as good as a restaurant, and definitely better than the jars in the grocery store.
If you’re a fan of other homemade staples you can also try my mayonnaise or mustard recipes as well.
What Tomatoes Are Best For Homemade Salsa?
There is no shortage of choices of fresh tomatoes in any market or grocery store. Roma, Cherry, Beefsteak, Grape, Campari, and many others are available. The health benefits of tomatoes are also worth looking at, because of their antioxidant properties. You can read more about the nutritional benefits of tomatoes here.
But, this is where I admit that I use canned diced tomatoes when I make salsa. I prefer to use a quality organic brand whenever possible, although any kind will work.
If you have an abundance of tomatoes from your garden, feel free to use those, but for simplicity and speed, we are going with canned for this recipe.
Ingredients Needed For Making Salsa
- Canned diced tomatoes, undrained
- Onion
- Fresh garlic cloves
- Jalapeño
- Lime
- Cumin
- Salt, pepper, and sugar
- Fresh cilantro
After you have chosen the tomatoes you want to use, decide on how spicy you would like your salsa to be. I use a regular jalapeño because I am not a huge fan of anything overly spicy.
I remove the rib and seeds as well. If you like a little heat but don’t want to go with a spicier pepper, just leave those in when you dice the jalapeño.
When it comes to cilantro, most people either love it or hate it because it has a very distinct flavor. I use a handful of fresh cilantro but you can adjust the amount to your liking. I have even left it out completely and the salsa is still delicious.
